    LENT 2015: Scandal (Easter Sunday)

April 5:  The Empty Tomb  Notes / Podcast

The grave is empty?! Jesus is sending peace to his sinful disciples?!

  • LENT 2015: Scandal (Good Friday)

    LENT 2015: Scandal (Good Friday)

    April 3:  The Curtain  Podcast

(Luke 23:44-49) God’s Son died?! What happened to the massive curtain?! What access do sinners have to a holy God?! I’d connect this to the whole Temple set-up, the Day of Atonement, and the idea of gospel access to the throne of grace, which is shocking and unexpected.

  • LENT 2015: Scandal (Maundy Thursday)

    LENT 2015: Scandal (Maundy Thursday)

    April 2:  The Towel

(John 13:1-17) Who washes whose feet?! Who serves whom?! I’d connect this to Jesus’ willingness to serve his messed up, confused disciples the Lord’s Supper on Thursday and to serve them a heaping plate of grace on Friday.

  • LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 6)

    LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 6)

    March 25:  The Plea  Podcast

(Luke 23:32-43) Jesus forgives the blood-thirsty, God-killing mob?! A hardened criminal softens in repentance?! Jesus accepts a last-minute confession?! The worst of the worst gets the best of the best?! I’d connect this to last minute confessions and God’s crazy willingness to forgive those who “don’t know what they’re doing”.

  • LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 5)

    LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 5)

    March 18:  The Decision  Podcast

(Luke 23:18-25) A murderer set free?! An innocent man condemned?! A mob triumphs over justice?! An innocent man condemned?! I’d connect this to vicarious atonement, the blood sacrifices of the OT, the Day of Atonement, and much more.

  • LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 4)

    LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 4)

    March 11:  The Trial  Podcast

(Luke 22:66-23:12) The laws of jurisprudence are out the window! The lies at his trial - He opposes payment of taxes! He’s like all those other riot-starting Messiah/Kings! Pilat and Herod’s own testimony of his innocence. The hypocrisy of the Sanhedrin to accuse Jesus of starting a riot and then starting one themselves! I’d connect this to the doctrine of justification and how Jesus is being treated as if he were guilty and how we are treated as if we were innocent.

  • LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 3)

    LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 3)

March 4:  The Arrest  (sorry...no Podcast available)

(Matthew 26:47-56) Under the cover of night?! Led by one of the 12?! A large crowd comes after Jesus?! In a private place?! Even Jesus called them out for the secrecy and the darkness of that scandalous arrest! I’d connect this to what we do as Christians when no one is looking. What thoughts go on in the privacy of our minds, what websites do we click when the door is closed, what happens at home that wouldn’t dare happen at church? Then I’d connect this to Jesus’ willingness to be arrested. Although he knocked the soldiers on their backsides with his words, he “hid” his divine power and allowed it all to happen…for the sake of grace.

  • LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 2)

    LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 2)

    February 25:  The Betrayal  Podcast

(Matthew 26:14-16) One of the hand-picked “friends” sells him out for a pocketful of cash?! Jesus’ church treasurer?! Judas started the conversation himself?! Our life isn’t any better. How scandalous are our sins where we betray Jesus; from selling him out for the sake of more hours at work, to more popularity at school, or the momentary pleasure found in a click of the mouse. The only difference between us and Judas is the we know the hope that is ours through Jesus who didn’t sell out on his mission, but instead overwhelms us with grace and love.

  • LENT 2015: Scandal (Series Summary & Week 1)

    LENT 2015: Scandal (Week 1)

    February 18:  The Plot  Podcast

(Matthew 26:1-5) The chief priests and elders?! The high priest?! During the Passover?! Kill the Son of Man?! The Pharisees' plot was what got the ball rolling on possibly the greatest scandal the world has ever known. Sadly plots to sin like this still happen today in our lives as we plot and scheme to sin against God. Thankfully we know of the gracious plot the Trinity had before time began and put into action to redeem us from our sins.

The President did what?!? The pastor said what?!? Our military did what to the prisoners?! The priest did what to the children?! To me, scandals aren’t just bad things because some bad things we expect to happen. Scandals deal with things we didn’t see coming, things that “shouldn’t” happen the way they do. The events of Jesus’ suffering and death would definitely qualify. But as we know there is more to this scandal than what transpired in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. The scandal includes us all! Sadly it is the scandal of our sin that caused all that Jesus endured. Yet even greater is the scandal that is God’s grace, his undeserved love for us, that caused him to send his Son, Jesus. During this season of Lent we will unpack The Scandal that took place 2,000 years ago and it’s significance for us still today.
